Artifacts: Build Beside the Chat

Turn a conversation into something you can see, use and improve: a page, a tool, a quiz game or a document next to the chat.

🔁 Remember: 🗂️ Projects keep things tidy Now: 🖼️ make things you can use!
👨‍👩‍👧
Reminder: Use Claude with a parent or teacher. Share artifacts only after a grown-up checks them, with no private details. Features change, so check Claude’s help pages.

2.1 What is an artifact?

🎯 Goal: know when Claude makes something beside the chat
  • An artifact is something Claude makes in its own panel next to the chat.
  • It can be a web page, a small app or game, a document or a diagram.
  • You can see it, use it and ask for changes without rewriting the chat.
  • If it is meant to be used, kept or shared, an artifact fits. Quick answers stay in chat.

💬 Chat vs 🖼️ Artifact

💬 Chat answerExplain, quick tips, one-time questions, short replies.
🖼️ ArtifactSomething to use, keep, edit or share: a quiz game, a calculator, a poster page.

🌍 Real-life examples

🧮 Fractions game“Make a small fractions quiz game I can play.”
📅 Timetable page“Make a colourful study timetable page for the week.”
🚀 Try it yourself
Make a small interactive study tool as one artifact: a 5-question quiz on [topic] for Class [x], with 3 options per question, a score at the end and bright colours. Use only school content.
❌ Weak“Tell me about quizzes.”
Just text, nothing to use.
✅ Good“Make a 5-question quiz game I can play.”
Something you can use.
🎉 Fun fact: The tools in this very course are small pages just like artifacts: one file you can open and use!

📝 Quick quiz

1. What is an artifact?

✅ Something Claude makes beside the chat, like a page, app or document.

2. Which is best as an artifact?
A) A quick fact   B) A playable quiz game

✅ B. Something to use or keep.

3. Can you ask for changes?

✅ Yes, ask Claude to edit it.

🔁

2.2 Ask, test, improve

🎯 Goal: refine an artifact step by step
  • Start with a small request and a clear idea.
  • Try it out: click, read, test.
  • Ask for one change at a time: “make the button bigger”.
  • Report problems clearly: what you saw and what you expected.

🌍 Real-life examples

🎨 Colours“Use calm blue and white. Make the text larger.”
🪲 Bug“The Next button does nothing. I expected it to show question 2.”
🚀 Try it yourself
Improve my artifact with one change only: [describe the change, e.g. make the score bigger and add a congratulations message at the end]. Do not change anything else.
❌ Weak“Make it better.”
Claude must guess.
✅ Good“Make the score bigger. Change nothing else.”
Precise result.
🏆 Mini challenge: Ask for a quiz, then make 3 separate improvements.

📝 Quick quiz

1. How many changes per request?

✅ One at a time is best.

2. What do you say about a bug?
A) “It is broken”   B) What I saw and what I expected

✅ B. Details help.

3. Why test first?

✅ You can only improve what you have tried.

🔒

2.3 Share and stay safe

🎯 Goal: know what is private and what is shared
  • An artifact can be private to you first. Sharing is a choice.
  • Before sharing, ask a parent or teacher.
  • Remove names, addresses, phone numbers, school names and photos.
  • Check facts and say “made with help from AI”.

🔒 Before you share

✅ Grown-up OK
A parent or teacher agreed
✅ No private info
Names, address, phone, school
✅ Facts checked
Compared with a reliable source
✅ Credit
Said AI helped

🌍 Real-life examples

🧪 SafeA science quiz with made-up examples.
🚫 Not safeA page with your address or classmates’ photos.
🚀 Try it yourself
Check this artifact text for personal information, unsafe content or unchecked facts, and give me a short list of things to fix before I show my teacher: [paste].
❌ WeakSharing a link right away.
May show private details.
✅ GoodChecking with a grown-up first.
Safe and responsible.
🎉 Fun fact: Good makers test and check before they show the world!
